Charitable Causes
Since 1981, the Buffalo Renaissance Foundation has had one clear purpose: to help move Western New York forward. Founded by local business leaders who believed Buffalo is an ideal place to live, work, and raise a family, the Foundation has remained committed to supporting the community for generations to come.
I was fortunate to join the Board in 1996, fifteen years after its founding. At BRF, we raise money—and we give it away. Our dues cover all administrative expenses, which means 100% of event proceeds are donated directly to organizations making a meaningful impact across Western New York.
Over the years, I have also been proud to support several other organizations that are close to my heart, including The Miracle League of WNY, SABAH, Catching Dreams, and, more recently, the Verite Neighborhood Impact Fund. While each serves the community in a different way, all share a common purpose: improving lives and strengthening Western New York.
This past year gave me the opportunity to spend time with several of these remarkable organizations and the people behind them. From a Sunday at The Miracle League field in Grand Island, to SABAH’s annual kickball celebration at the Nardin Athletic Complex, to Ned’s Catching Dreams fishing tournament along the lower Niagara, to BRF’s Executive of the Year kickoff luncheon at Kleinhans, I was reminded again how much good can be accomplished through vision, compassion, and commitment.
I have also recently come to know Don Jones and the Verite Neighborhood Impact Fund, whose work is helping lay a strong foundation in Buffalo through neighborhood investment and revitalization. Their efforts are making a meaningful difference, and I am proud to include them among the causes recognized here.
This message is simply a shout-out to organizations and leaders who continue to make a real difference in the lives of others, every single day.
Scott McManinagel – The Miracle League of WNY

Scott McManinagel, Executive Director of The Miracle League of WNY, creates a space where baseball is for everyone, regardless of physical or developmental challenges. The Miracle League’s field in Grand Island is filled each week with smiles, laughter, and the joy of inclusion.
Scott also serves as the Executive Director of the Buffalo Renaissance Foundation, which I am proud to support as a member. His leadership has left a lasting mark on both organizations, bringing community and opportunity to countless individuals.
Sheila O’Brien – SABAH

Sheila O’Brien, Executive Director of SABAH, leads a remarkable program that empowers individuals with disabilities through adaptive ice skating, as well as year-round recreational events like the kickball extravaganza. SABAH gives participants confidence, independence, and lifelong friendships—helping them grow on and off the ice.
Ned Librock – Catching Dreams Charters

Ned Librock, Executive Director of Catching Dreams Charters, provides children and families affected by pediatric cancer and other challenges with unforgettable days of fishing on the Niagara. His mission is simple but profound: to create joy and provide an escape from the burdens of illness.
Don Jones – Verite Neighborhood Impact Fund

Don Jones and the Verite Foundation are working to break cycles of economic exclusion by expanding access to opportunity. Their mission is rooted in the belief that every community contains the talent, creativity, and potential to build thriving local economies, but that systemic barriers too often stand in the way.
Through access to business education, real estate, capital, and technical assistance, Verite is helping revitalize communities and create pathways to wealth and long-term economic stability. I am proud to recognize Don and the Verite Neighborhood Impact Fund among the organizations making a meaningful difference in Buffalo.
Each of them is dedicated to bringing joy, opportunity, and purpose to individuals with physical disabilities or life challenges—yet never diminished in spirit or in the joy that sports and recreation bring.
The beauty of Buffalo is how their work complements the seasons: Sheila thrives in the winter months as SABAH empowers individuals through adaptive ice skating. Ned and Scott shine in the summer, where fishing and softball create lifelong memories and friendships.
What unites Don, Sheila, Ned, and Scott is their shared mission: raising funds and awareness to support lifelong growth, joy, and community. Whether it’s an underserved neighborhood, escaping the burdens of pediatric cancer through a fishing trip, or creating inclusive experiences for those with Down syndrome and other challenges, their organizations are proof that sport and recreation can change lives.
These four friends of mine deserve equal homage—as do so many other remarkable nonprofits across Western New York. If you have even a little spare change or time, I encourage you to support their causes. They are constantly in need of help, and every contribution makes a difference.
